Herman was an accomplished tennis player and prior to World War 1 represented Tamworth in Country Week competitions in Sydney on several occasions.

He served in the Australian Army in World Warl and was twice badly wounded. The first occasion was in action in Egypt and after being hospitalized in England volunteered for stretcher duty in France. Here he was hit in the face by a piece of shrapnel and badly disfigured.

Herman farmed at Gidley, near Tamworth, for approximately forty years. After selling his farm he retired to Tamworth and was a prominent member of the West Tamworth Bowling Club.
