Family Places
Introduction to Family Places
The five Arnold brothers, Gottlieb, Gottlob, Ehrenfried, Wilhelm and Carl Friedrich, with their mother Elisabeth Arnold, came to South Australia from our homeland of Silesia. Today Silesia is a historic region in Central Europe that lies mostly within Poland, with small parts in the Czech Republic and Germany. The Arnold book Changing Pastures has an excellent introduction to Silesia.
The Arnold family today is scattered throughout Australia and increasingly, throughout the world. There are some key areas where the second and third generations settled and here we highlight some of those places. The Barossa Valley remains the heart place of the Arnold story. We have a list of land purchased by all five brothers, starting in 1853 and the history of inheritance over the decades until the land was sold outside the Arnold family.
A thirteen-page booklet details key Arnold burial places and those family members linked to the five brothers, from 1872 to 2002. In recent decades Memory Stones have been laid to commemorate each of the original brothers and families are encourage to visit these sites.
Nine Lutheran churches in the Barossa Valley and other key nearby regions show the cemeteries and head stones of our early forefathers and foremothers. Some early headstones were written in German. Cemeteries with Arnold family headstones from other regions, have yet to be added.
Included in Family Places is an Arnold Family Tour of the Barossa Valley and we look forward to adding more tours in the future, from various historical Arnold areas around Australia. This will enable future Arnold generations to explore the sites of their ancestors. Further information about the Barossa Valley, Albury Wodonga, Walla Walla, Riverland and Johnburg and other places linked to the Arnold family continues to grow, as family members contribute stories, documents and photographs.
We hope you enjoy the fascinating information about the Family Places linked to the Arnold family.
