On the 15th of August 1848 Johann Gottlob Arnold, second son of Johanne Elisabeth and Johann Gottfried Arnold, set sail from Hamburg aboard the Alfred. He was the first of five brothers to make the journey to Australia. His voyage to Australia, however, was a pleasant one. After five days sailing, and under Captain Decker, a Danish frigate caught sight of the Alfred and set after her at full sail. The experienced and capable Captain Decker kept the Alfred safe from attack. There were storms in the early part of the journey and much sea sickness. Approaching the Equator, the heat was unbearable, and the ship was beset with a period of calm. By 10 October they had reached Rio Dejaneira, and it was here that the passengers first saw oranges and bananas – a very welcome sight after what they had on board.
The ship left Brazil and set sail for the Cape of Good Hope arriving at Port Adelaide on 6 (or 8?) December 1848. Gottlob was now ready to start a new life on Australian soil. Shortly after his arrival, he travelled to the Barossa Valley and inspected some land. On 13 August 1851, Gottlob was naturalized as a British subject – a prerequisite to purchase land. He married Johanna Sophia Michel at the Langmeil Church on 21 October 1851. They were married by Pastor August Ludwig Kavel, the leader in Australia of early German immigrants.
The first recorded purchase of land by Gottlob was sixteen acres (six and a half hectares) being part Section 82 in the Hundred of Nuriootpa for 32 pound ($64) on 19 May 1853. The property was at Gnadenfrei (Marananga) close to the now famous Seppeltsfield winery, and in 1856 was recorded as cultivated and fenced with no buildings.
Gottlob and Sophia had nine children between 1852 and 1869 – Anna Maria (Married Friedrich August Rohrich), Johann Gottfried (married Johanne Elisabeth Rothe), Joanne August, Johanne Gottlieb (married Johnna Ernestine Arnold). Emilie Anna (married Gottlob Emanuel Hoffmann), Johann Gotthilf (married Anna Auguste Schoeder), Johanne Christiane (married Andreas Mickan), Johann Gottlob (married Johanne Louise Karoline Klemke) and Johann Wilhelm (married Johanne Maria Ernstine Klemke).
