Educated at Mypolonga Primary and Murray Bridge High Schools, Bernice then became the telephonist, while the family had the Post Office, and assisted in the store.
Bernice was a very good pianist, sang in the church choir, played tennis, basketball and golf. After her marriage she and her husband Colin
purchased a small farm on which they grew lucerne, sweet corn and vegetables for local consumption. In 1972 they sold their farm and bought a house in Murray Bridge where Colin worked at John Shearer & Sons implement works in the spare parts department. He was a keen golfer and bowls player.
