Walter attended Point Pass school and confirmation instruction. At the age of twelve years, he suffered severe rheumatic fever which left him in a weakened condition, and this had a debilitating effect on his health for most of his life. While he was recuperating his sister Ester used to wheel him around outside the house so he could see the outdoors and get some of the warm sunshine.
He worked for his brother Harry on the farm and in the butchering trade. After living in Adelaide for some time he suffered a brain tumor from which he recovered for a short period. He died on 19 April 1956 and is buried in the West Terrace cemetery in Adelaide.
